SOS Children’s Villages is raising 80,000 children in over 500 villages across 133 countries, including the U.S. This past December, I did photography for SOS from the world’s biggest slum, Kibera in Nairobi.
The campaign is called, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
“It takes a village to raise a child” is an African saying, referring to the role of the society and the surroundings of the child in the upbringing. The campaign aims to support the world’s most vulnerable children in Sub-Saharan Africa. A child needs a safe environment to grow up in, no matter where the child is born. In Kenya, SOS Children’s Villages has been working since 1973 to help vulnerable children. In the slums of the city, SOS focuses on raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and provides nutrition and education for children. The efforts also address the issue of street children. Where possible, SOS tries to reunite children with their families, as well as integrate them into the formal school system.
