Mali

SOS Children’s Villages International asked me to go to Mali and photograph the current situation in the country.

Due to the complicated situation within the country my travel schedule was changed and instead of Mopti we traveled to Kita and Kayes. In Kita there’s already a well functioning SOS Village. It has 15 families with 10 children per family. Each family has one mother and one aunt. Furthermore there is a kindergarten with 180 children and a school, covering from elementary over middle up to high school. The school has a bit more than 800 students. Kindergarten and school have pupils from within the SOS Village, Kita and the surrounding villages in the area. The city of Kayes or rather the nearby town of Khouloum has been chosen as location for the next SOS Village. The model for this SOS Village is the same as in Kita. Until the Village is completed SOS has rented houses in Kayes, where the mothers and aunts are living with the children. The children are all from up north in Mali and no older than 2 years. The dire situation there unfortunately has produced a lot of orphans.
